Turing's Last Cipher: The Lost Archive

This is a submission for the June Solstice Game Jam

What I Built

Turing's Last Cipher: The Lost Archive is a browser-based cryptography adventure inspired by the life, work, and legacy of Alan Turing.

Players take on the role of a young cryptanalyst who gains access to a classified archive known as Project Enigma II. Hidden within the archive are encrypted messages, secret documents, and clues connected to Alan Turing's final research.

The game challenges players to solve a series of increasingly difficult cipher puzzles, including:

• Caesar Cipher


• Reverse Cipher


• Binary Encoding


• Morse Code


• Frequency Analysis


• Vigenère Cipher


• Enigma-inspired challenges

As players progress, they unlock classified archive files, historical information about Alan Turing, achievements, and narrative fragments that reveal the mystery behind the Lost Archive.

The game culminates in a final Turing Test-inspired challenge where players must determine whether an entity is human or machine, paying tribute to one of Turing's most influential ideas.

Connection to the Theme

This project was inspired by the "Best Ode to Alan Turing" prize category.

Alan Turing's contributions to computer science, artificial intelligence, and cryptography shaped the modern digital world. Through puzzle-solving, code-breaking, and narrative exploration, the game celebrates his legacy while introducing players to concepts that influenced modern computing.

The game also reflects the spirit of the June Solstice theme by focusing on discovery, transformation, and reaching a turning point—the moment where hidden knowledge becomes visible.

How I Built It

The project was designed as an immersive retro-computing experience inspired by wartime codebreaking facilities and early computer systems.

User Interface

The visual design combines:

Puzzle System

Each cipher challenge is implemented as a reusable puzzle module with:

Archive System

Players unlock classified documents throughout the game. These files gradually reveal story elements while also teaching real cryptographic concepts and historical facts about Alan Turing.

Save System

Progress is stored locally using browser localStorage, allowing players to continue their investigation between sessions.

Narrative Design

Instead of relying on external AI services, the game uses a handcrafted branching narrative and archive-based storytelling system. This approach allowed for a more consistent experience while maintaining the atmosphere of communicating with an intelligent cryptographic assistant.
