The Hidden Complexity of Multi-Backend Container Platforms

Container platforms often promise portability.

"Run anywhere."

"Switch backends anytime."

"Avoid vendor lock-in."

While these goals are attractive, the engineering challenges become obvious once you attempt to support multiple execution backends under a single platform.

At Gravoxlab, we're examining the practical realities of designing systems that can operate across multiple container runtimes and orchestration layers.

What Is a Multi-Backend Container Platform?

A multi-backend platform abstracts infrastructure and allows workloads to execute across different backends, such as:

  • Kubernetes

  • Docker

  • containerd

  • Nomad

  • Firecracker

  • Podman

The objective is usually flexibility and resilience.

The challenge is consistency.

Problem 1: Networking Abstractions Break Down

Every backend handles networking differently.

Examples include:

  • Service discovery mechanisms

  • Overlay networks

  • Ingress models

  • Load balancing behavior

  • Network policy enforcement

A platform abstraction often hides these differences initially, but eventually backend-specific behaviors surface.

The abstraction leaks.

Problem 2: Storage Is Never Truly Portable

Persistent storage creates significant friction.

Challenges include:

  • Volume lifecycle management

  • Snapshot capabilities

  • Storage class differences

  • Stateful workload portability

  • Backup integration

Stateless workloads migrate easily.

Stateful workloads rarely do.

Problem 3: Security Models Diverge

Security assumptions vary dramatically.

Examples:

  • Namespace isolation

  • Runtime sandboxing

  • RBAC implementation

  • Secret management

  • Policy enforcement

Supporting multiple security models while maintaining a consistent developer experience is difficult.

Problem 4: Observability Fragmentation

Observability pipelines often become backend-specific.

Common issues:

  • Different metrics formats

  • Logging architectures

  • Tracing integrations

  • Runtime telemetry availability

Without careful design, teams end up maintaining separate monitoring strategies for each backend.

Problem 5: Feature Drift

This is often the most expensive problem.

Backends evolve independently.

A feature available today in one backend may not exist elsewhere.

Platform teams must decide whether to:

  • Expose backend-specific features

  • Restrict functionality to common capabilities

  • Maintain compatibility layers

None of these options are ideal.

The Real Engineering Question

The goal is not to hide infrastructure differences completely.

The goal is to create abstractions that simplify operations while still allowing engineers to access backend-specific capabilities when needed.

That balance determines whether a platform succeeds or becomes another operational burden.

What challenges have you encountered when building or operating multi-runtime infrastructure?

Let's discuss.
