iPhone Fold Supply Could Be Limited If Apple Fails to Fix Hinge Issues

Apple’s first iPhone Fold could bring one of the most advanced OLED displays ever used on an iPhone, but a reported hinge issue now raises questions about its launch timeline.



The foldable iPhone is expected to use a 3D printed liquid metal hinge to lower costs, although Apple still needs to solve rattling and stability problems before mass production begins.



The Elec reports that Samsung has received Apple’s approval to begin OLED manufacturing for the iPhone Fold, with an initial supply plan of around 3 million units. The display is expected to use Samsung’s M16 OLED technology with Color Filter on Encapsulation, which helps improve screen quality while keeping the panel thin.



However, the hinge remains the bigger concern because it affects the crease, folding feel, long-term durability, and final assembly speed. If Apple needs to inspect each hinge more closely, production can slow down by 15 days to one month, which directly affects launch stock.



Apple is reportedly discussing a September launch window for the iPhone Fold, but availability can slip if the company fails to fix the hinge issue in time. Even if Apple announces the device in 2026, limited supply or delayed shipments can push wider availability into 2027.
