Microsoft Authenticator Update Bans Rooted And Jailbroken Phones

People who change their phone settings for extra control will now face limits when signing into work or school systems. Microsoft recently updated its security app to spot unauthorized software changes. This update restricts access for anyone using a modified Apple or Android device. The block applies automatically without needing any setup from a local IT team. It specifically targets passwords used for business and education accounts.



The block only affects business and school sign-in accounts



The system leaves personal accounts completely untouched. If you just use the app for basic security codes on normal shopping sites, you are fine. The restriction only applies to Entra accounts, which handle logins for businesses and schools.



The update started rolling out early this year. Detection features arrived in February, and the iPhone version followed in April. Microsoft states that it expects full coverage by the middle of the year. The app usually starts by showing a warning message. After that, it blocks access and removes the work credentials from the device entirely.



Phones missing standard app services will also face login blocks



Users who never modified their phones might still run into trouble. The official support page explains that work accounts need Google Play Services to run normally. Devices from brands like Huawei often lack these services out of the box. Because of this, the app marks them as unsafe even if they are completely normal.



Privacy-focused operating systems face the same issue. A spokesperson for Microsoft confirmed that it does not officially support platforms like GrapheneOS. If you get locked out, your best option is to contact your IT support team. You may need to restore the phone to its normal factory settings or switch to a physical security key to get back into your account.
