Supreme Court Steps Into Apple And Epic Games App Store Fight

The United States Supreme Court is officially stepping into the long running legal battle between Apple and Epic Games. The highest court recently agreed to hear a new appeal regarding a previous contempt ruling against the tech giant. This high stakes dispute focuses entirely on the commission fees developers must pay to sell their digital products and games directly to consumers outside the official App Store payment system.



The justices will decide if the commission's rules were broken



Back in 2021, a lower court judge ordered the iPhone maker to let app developers link users to outside payment options. The company allowed these links but introduced a 27 percent commission on purchases made through them. The creator of Fortnite argued that this new fee made the outside links practically useless.



In early 2025, a judge ruled the tech company acted in contempt because it violated the spirit of the original order. The judge demanded the company stop charging the fee entirely. An appeals court upheld this contempt finding late last year. Now, the smartphone maker is asking the Supreme Court to review the ruling. It argues that courts should only punish companies for breaking the exact written text of an order, not just the spirit of it.



The justices will hear the arguments during the upcoming October term. A final decision on how the platform handles these developer payments is expected by the summer of 2027.



The outcome of this case will set a major legal standard for the entire technology industry. It will ultimately decide exactly how much control a platform owner can keep over outside purchases made by its users.
