Microsoft Lost a Lawsuit to a Gamer Over Account Access and Must Restore His Games

Microsoft lost a lawsuit to a gamer over account access after a Brazilian court ordered the company to restore his blocked Microsoft account and digital Xbox game library.

Gamer lost access after his Microsoft account was compromised

The Brazilian gamer, known online as Ordo_Liberal, said someone gained unauthorized access to his Microsoft account even though he had enabled two-factor authentication.

Microsoft detected changes to the account’s security information and permanently blocked the account. As a result, the gamer lost access to every digital game connected to it.

The restriction affected more than his Xbox profile. A Microsoft account can also contain Windows licences, Microsoft Store purchases, OneDrive files and other paid services. Losing the account therefore placed several digital products at risk.

Microsoft reportedly told him to buy his games again

The gamer contacted Microsoft’s support team and attempted to prove that he owned the account. However, the available recovery methods did not help him regain access.

According to support messages shared by the gamer, Microsoft completed an investigation but refused to reopen the account. Support representatives reportedly told him that the suspension was permanent and suggested that he purchase his digital games again through a new account.

This response left him without access to games that he had already paid for. After failing to resolve the matter through customer support, he took Microsoft to court through Brazil’s consumer protection system.

Brazilian court ruled in the gamer’s favour

The court ordered Microsoft to restore the account along with all digital games linked to it. Microsoft received 15 days to follow the order and could face additional fines for failing to comply.

The judge also awarded the gamer R$2,000 in moral damages, which is worth roughly $400. A further 10 percent penalty reportedly applies if Microsoft misses the payment deadline.

The gamer claimed that Microsoft sent 12 lawyers to handle the case. He used public legal assistance and said he did not have to pay private legal fees.

The ruling raises questions about digital game ownership

The case has gained attention because digital purchases usually remain connected to a platform account. When a company blocks or closes that account, the customer can lose access to years of purchases at once.

Gaming platforms generally describe digital games as licensed content instead of property that customers fully own. However, the Brazilian ruling required Microsoft to return access to the gamer’s purchases rather than treating the account closure as final.

The decision applies to one person and comes from a first-instance small-claims court in Brazil. It does not automatically create a legal rule for courts in other countries, and Microsoft could still pursue further legal action depending on the local process.

Microsoft had not issued a public response to the ruling when reports about the case appeared. Still, the result shows that account suspensions can face legal scrutiny when customers lose access to paid digital libraries without an effective recovery process.
