App Store Rule Changes And A Gaming Slowdown Hit Apple’s Services Cash

Apple is still pulling in massive amounts of money from its services division, but the numbers recently fell slightly short of Wall Street's lofty expectations. The technology giant reported a strong $30.7 billion in services revenue for the quarter, marking a healthy 12 percent jump from the same time last year. However, analysts expected slightly more from the division.



The company pointed to a couple of key hurdles that kept those numbers from going even higher, specifically mentioning shifting rules for the App Store and a slow stretch for mobile video games.



Changing global marketplace rules take a toll on expected profits



Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh addressed the slight revenue miss directly during the Q3 2026 earnings call. Parekh explained that the company is currently navigating a complicated web of new regulations that change how it collects money from developers in different parts of the world.



According to Parekh:




"We also had some factors that impacted the performance of the App Store. We did see some headwinds in mobile gaming, and then keep in mind, we also made some changes to the App Store business model in certain countries, and in the U.S., we do continue to operate under a court ruling impacting the link-out transactions. But we're pleased the Supreme Court will hear our appeal".




Recent updates to fee structures in places like Japan, Brazil, and the European Union mean Apple is simply collecting less money from certain app transactions. In the United States, the ongoing legal battle over letting developers link to outside payment options continues to complicate how the store makes money.



Even with those regulatory roadblocks and the dip in gaming revenue, the digital storefront still managed to set a revenue record for the June quarter. The services division as a whole also saw massive growth in cloud storage, video streaming, and Apple Pay usage.



While the App Store might be facing a bumpy road right now, the broader services category continues to be a massive, reliable money maker for the brand.
