Meta Ordered to Pay $567 Million in Massive Child Safety Case

A state court has ordered Meta to pay $567 million to address the mental health impact its platforms have had on young people. The judge ruled that the company created a public nuisance by designing features that keep teenagers addicted to its apps. This brings the total penalty in this specific case to nearly $1 billion, following an earlier jury decision that already fined the social media giant $375 million.



The court demands new limits on teenage accounts



The judge laid out a strict five-year plan that forces the company to overhaul how teenagers experience Facebook and Instagram. The new rules require monthly time limits for younger users and place tighter restrictions on how adults can interact with minors on the platform.



The court also demanded safer guardrails around artificial intelligence chatbots and stronger systems to review reports of abuse. However, the judge decided against forcing the platform to collect personal data to verify user ages, noting that federal privacy laws prevent companies from tracking children under thirteen.



Meta said that it is going to appeal the judgment:




“We work hard to keep people safe on our platforms and have been transparent about the challenges of identifying and removing bad actors and harmful content. We remain confident in our record of protecting teens online and will continue to defend ourselves against claims that misrepresent the facts",” company spokesperson Andy Stone said in an emailed statement".




The money funds treatment programs for young users



Most of the financial penalty will go directly toward helping teenagers who have struggled with mental health issues linked to social media use. Out of the total amount, $420 million is set aside for youth treatment services across the state.



The remaining funds will cover awareness campaigns, prevention programs, and screening services over the next five years. The company plans to appeal the decision, stating in a public response that it remains confident in the safety measures it already has in place for young people.



This legal outcome sets a major precedent for how courts view the design choices of tech platforms. With dozens of other states and school districts preparing similar lawsuits, the pressure on social media companies to rethink their algorithms is only just beginning.
