Joe’s kidnapping changes the direction of Season 3



Spoilers ahead for Lioness Season 3, Episode 2.



Episode 2 opens with Joe captured by men apparently connected to Russian intelligence. Her abductors know enough about CIA surveillance methods to locate and remove a tracking device hidden in her toe, showing that Joe is dealing with people who understand exactly how American operatives work.



The episode then moves between the kidnapping and events from six months earlier. During that period, foreign operatives targeted Joe’s home, bringing the consequences of her CIA work directly to Neal and the rest of her family.



The attackers from the earlier incident are identified as Belarusian nationals, with the CIA suspecting connections to Russia’s SVR. Their interest in Joe appears tied to the Lioness team’s previous operation in Ukraine, where the Americans grabbed a Russian intelligence target.



The CIA realizes someone exposed Joe



Kaitlyn Meade and Byron Westfield now have a much larger problem. Joe’s enemies know who she is, where she lives and enough about Lioness operations to plan retaliation.



At the same time, Cruz returns from Ukraine and reconnects with Josephina Carrillo as the team deals with the fallout from the operation. The QRF also discovers enemy surveillance near Joe’s home, confirming that the threat extends far beyond one kidnapping.



Attention eventually turns toward the possibility that information leaked through someone connected to the Ukraine operation. A Ukrainian source becomes particularly important as the CIA tries to determine who passed information about Joe to the Russians.



How Episode 2 sets up the rest of Lioness Season 3



The first two seasons regularly showed Joe struggling to separate her missions from her family life. Season 1 focused on Cruz infiltrating Aaliyah Amrohi’s world, while Season 2 brought Cruz back and introduced Josephina during an operation involving a kidnapped congresswoman and foreign-backed cartel activity.



Season 3 pushes that conflict much closer to Joe herself. With foreign operatives targeting her family and Joe now in enemy hands, the CIA must uncover how her identity leaked while also finding a way to bring her home.
