Apple Planned a ‘White-Glove’ iPhone Upgrade Feature, but Never Released It

Apple reportedly considered making the iPhone upgrade process much easier by shipping new devices with a customer’s iCloud data already copied over, giving Apple Upgrade users a phone that was almost ready to use as soon as it arrived.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple discussed the idea years ago as part of a “white-glove” service for Apple Upgrade, where customers receiving a new iPhone each year would get the device with their iCloud backup already restored before delivery.

The idea would have removed one of the most time-consuming parts of switching iPhones, especially for customers who regularly upgrade through monthly payment plans. However, Apple never launched the feature, and there were several practical problems that likely made the system difficult to offer.

A backup restored before shipping would already be a few days old by the time the customer received the phone, which means recent messages, photos, app data, and other changes would still need to sync after setup.

Privacy would have created another concern because customers would need to trust Apple with the process of restoring personal data before the device reached them, even if employees never directly accessed that information.

Apple already has technology that shows how part of this process could work. Its Presto system allows Apple Store employees to update unopened iPhones while they remain inside their boxes, which means Apple can make software changes without manually setting up each device.

Apple ultimately left the preloaded data feature out of Apple Upgrade, so customers still need to transfer or restore their own information when setting up a new iPhone.
