Apple Watch Could Bring Back Ceramic Case Option After Seven Years

Apple could bring back the ceramic Apple Watch as part of a much broader rethink of its smartwatch lineup, with the premium case material reportedly under consideration for a return as early as this year.



Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple has been working on a new ceramic case option and could launch it either this year or next, almost seven years after the material last appeared on the Apple Watch Series 5.



Apple first introduced ceramic with the Apple Watch Series 2, later added a black version with Series 3, and then returned to a white ceramic finish with Series 5. Apple discontinued the option when it launched Series 6 in 2020.



The ceramic models stood out because of their glossy finish and strong scratch resistance, while their high prices also placed them well above standard aluminum and titanium versions. The Series 5 ceramic Apple Watch started at $1,299, compared with $399 for the cheapest Apple Watch Series 11 today.



Apple is also exploring bigger Apple Watch changes



Gurman says Apple is considering several new directions for the Apple Watch, including different screen types, new sizes, display-free wearable devices, and more premium models positioned above the Ultra and Hermès versions.



Apple has also studied a round Apple Watch, although Gurman says such a design remains unlikely to reach the market.



The company is reportedly responding to stronger competition from smart rings and screen-free fitness trackers while also planning a greater focus on AI and health features. A ceramic Apple Watch could become one part of that wider effort to refresh the lineup and give premium buyers another high-end option.
