The RAM crisis isn’t really happening inside computer stores. It starts inside some of the largest and most expensive semiconductor factories on Earth. AI has created enormous demand for memory, with NVIDIA’s latest accelerators requiring increasingly massive amounts of HBM. South Korea’s SK Hynix is responding by investing heavily in advanced HBM production, including its enormous M15X facility and the future Yongin memory complex. But China’s CXMT is taking a completely different approach. Instead of focusing primarily on the bleeding edge, CXMT is aggressively expanding conventional DRAM production—including DDR5 and LPDDR using massive new manufacturing capacity. And that could matter far more to ordinary consumers waiting for desktop RAM, laptops and phones to become cheaper again. In this video, we break down why AI caused the memory shortage, how HBM is manufactured, SK Hynix’s enormous expansion, CXMT’s rise as a challenger to Samsung, Micron and SK Hynix, and why hundreds of thousands of additional wafers per month could eventually push memory prices back down. But there’s a catch: DRAM has a brutal history of overproduction. The same factories that could end the RAM shortage could eventually create an enormous memory glut.
