David Heinemeier Hansson spent more than 20 years using macOS. Then he put roughly 3,000 hours into building the computer experience he actually wanted: Omarchy.

DHH created Ruby on Rails, co-owns 37signals, and now he’s rethinking what a personal computer should feel like. In this conversation, DHH and I talk about why he left macOS, why Omarchy is built around Arch Linux, Hyprland, and Quickshell, and why opinionated defaults might be Linux’s best shot at becoming genuinely approachable.

This isn’t a distro tour. It’s a conversation about ownership, taste, constraints, and the vision behind DHH’s perfect operating system.
