I’m trying to wrap my head around Linux and how it works.

I know it’s open source, but are the distros just a coat of paint differences?

Can I install a basic distros, and add or remove packages to make it look different? Can I install gnome, but add a different desktop package that changes it?

Is there a base os that adds a framework, then I can flesh it out with different security packages, different web browser, different office suites?

Is that what makes, say, gnome different from mint?
